1. Native American tribes (Ciboney, Arawak) were the first inhabitants on the island. Also the Caribs, a cannibalistic tribe, invaded the island many times. The Arawak called the island 'Ayiti'2. Christopher Columbus "discovered" the island which he called ‘La isla de Española’ (the Spanish island, Latin: 'Hispaniola' wink . As you can guess, the Spanish empire colonized the island and founded the colony of 'Santo Domingo'.3. French explorers settled on the western part of Hispaniola, which frustrated Spain. The isle is now divided in two European colonies.4. The French colony dominated the Spanish one, and since then France has the full rule on the island. However, African slaves started a rebellion against the French.5. The slaves won the rebellion. Former slave Jean-Jacques Dessalines declared himself 'Emperor Jacques I of Haiti'. The emperor ordered to kill all colonist (especially French).6. Two years later Emperor Jacques I was assassinated by Henri Christophe and Alexandre Pétion. They divided Haiti in two parts, Christophe became president of the northern part and Pétion ruled the south.7. The Spanish reconquered Santo Domingo, and later the colony became independent as the 'Republic of Santo Domingo'. Both Haiti’s became much smaller. Henri Christophe made himself president for life and later king of his part of Haiti, 'king Henri I'.8. After King Henri I committed suicide and his successor was killed, both Haiti’s reunited to one Haiti.9. Haiti anschlussed Santo Domingo, ruling the whole island again.10. The eastern part became independent again as the Dominican Republic, but 'Murica invaded it twice for protecting the Panama Canal. Haiti is pissed because it's having only a third part of the island area.11. Both nations are ruled by dictators, Haiti by François 'Papa Doc' Duvalier (succeeded by his son Jean-Claude, or 'Baby Doc' wink and the Dominican Republic by Rafael 'Crown Cork' Trujillo. Communist Cuba invaded Haiti, which failed.12. Today.
